Enjoy! ************************************* "Why are we here, Mulder?" she asks as she steps from the car. "Scully, remember, we talked about the element of surprise." I say as I pull a bag full of equipment from the trunk of my car. "Mulder, we have been driving for almost three hours. You got me with the element of surprise when we finally stopped. Now, why are we here?" she asked looking around at the field. "Scully, do you remember when I took you to see those astronomers?" "Yes." She answered slowly a she looked around for astronomers. "Well, Phil told me that tonight there was going to be a total lunar eclipse." "So, we're here to see the lunar eclipse?" she smiled at me. "Yes." I smile, quite proud of myself. We had been out of town on a case and it was a small miracle we were back in time for this. She was smiling one of those rare wide smiles so I knew I was on the right track tonight. "So, what's in the bag?" she laughed. "That's for later," I leer at her. "Mulder" she laughs as she swats at me. "This is a date, right Scully?" "Excuse me?" "Didn't we have a discussion about bases last time?" "What's in the bag, Mulder?" she snickers. "Ah ha, behold." I said as I pulled a telescope stand out of the bag. "So, we get to see them up close." "We do." It took a few minutes for the two of us to set up the telescope without it falling over. But once set up, the telescope looked better than I had expected. Frohike had really made quite the investment. I then lay back on the grass and relaxed with my hands behind my head. "Mulder, you can't see the stars up close that way." She said as she eyed the stars. "It'll be a couple of hours before it happens." "What?!" she gasped. "It doesn't happen until about 2am." "Mulder..." she started to whine. "Come on and relax" I say as I pat the grass next to me. "Mulder, this isn't..." "Go with it, Scully." I interrupt. She lays down about a foot away from me and hugs her torso. I can see she feels quite awkward. "So, give me a constellation." "Pardon?" she asks. "Your father was a sailor, you have to have some inside scoop on the constellations." "My dad relied more on sonar than the night sky, Mulder." "Humor me." "Okay...see the inverted mountain?" "Yes." "That's Piceses." "You know Scully, from this angle it looks like a woman's..." "So, you've found it." "It's not my first time." She laughs at my crude joke and uncrosses her arms from her body. "What else you got?" "See the triangle next to Pieces?" she asks as she points to the sky. "On which side?" I ask as I strain to find what she is describing. "Over there." She said as she scooted over and leaned against me with her shoulder so I could follow the path of her arm. "Up high there?" I ask as my hand joins hers in the air pointing at the sky. "Yeah." "Got it." "That's Triangulum." "Geez, who came up with such an inventive name for a triangle in the sky?" I scoff. "Well, it's not very interesting but it's usually easy to spot." "I guess." I scowl. We lay in silence for quite a while when I suddenly start to hear her breathing even out. She has fallen asleep on the grass right next to me. I turn my head to see that she is definitely asleep but probably cold. I get up from my spot next to her and go to the bag to grab a blanket I had inside. I lay it across her sleeping form but she stirs and rolls onto her side. Part of me wishes I was still in my spot next to her because right then she would be curled up against me. I can't think of anything else that would be a better feeling in the world. I look down at her, fast asleep on a grass bed, then I look toward the night sky and I pick out the constellations she's shown me. I go back to laying next to her, with about a foot in between us. I think I could stare at her face all night, but I resolve to wake her to see the eclipse. Otherwise she'd be mad I dragged her away from her warm bed for nothing. I lay there and think about her, our partnership, and all the reasons I shouldn't be taking her on these excursions with me outside of work. How being with her is the thing I want most, but also the thing I am most scared of. I fall asleep with these thoughts on my mind and wake to her voice. "Mulder?" she asks from somewhere near my armpit. "Yeah? Scully?" I ask groggily. "Mulder, what time is it?" she asks as she pulls her body away from mine. "Uh...5:12 am Scully." I say as I try and focus on my watch. "I've been asleep since midnight?" "We both have, from the looks of it." I say as I sit up on the grass. "We missed the lunar eclipse." "Shit, I'm sorry Mulder, I was just so tired..." "No, I should have stayed awake." I said quietly. We both sat and wiped the sleep from our eyes as we adjusted our rumpled clothes. I finally stood up and offered her my hand to get up. "Thanks" she said softly. "Next lunar eclipse Scully, no matter where we are, we are going to keep ourselves to see it, deal?" "The next lunar eclipse, Mulder, I'm all yours." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The end of part 2
