He was anxious to leave and she seemed to be taking forever to come downstairs. He left her about 7 minutes ago and, as far as he could tell, she was fully clothed and made up. What was taking her so long to get downstairs was beyond him. The old porch creaked under him and he tested the floor board time and time again. It needed replaced and he would do that later this week. She finally emerged from the house and smiled at him noticing his anxious stature. "Sorry," she offered "I realized just as I was about to come down that my jeans had a big chocolate stain on the leg." "Chocolate?" he asked "Remember when we fell asleep on the couch last week?" she reminded him. "I had a piece of chocolate in my pocket and it must have melted." "You are hot, Scully" he quipped as he watched her lock the door. "Okay, let's go" she said as she turned to him. They both got in the car and she started the drive down their laneway to the gate. He jumped out and opened the gate, closing it behind them after she pulled through. He didn't get beyond the gate often, so he appreciated the locking noise it made as he shut it from the other side. He got in the car and she started the three hour drive to Danville. They had a post office box there and checked it about every three weeks, depending on Scully's schedule. Any warnings they needed to heed were sent to that address. One of the last ones they got was 3 years ago when Scully was still in hiding with him. It was a message concerning her brother Bill, who had been in an on-board accident and was recovering from severe burns in the hospital. She hadn't taken the news well. Soon after that they received their last message, the one from Skinner, saying Scully could come out of hiding. She made a beeline for her brother and was happy to see he was doing well. Besides the messages, Mulder received several newspaper and magazine subscriptions there that Scully refused to have delivered to the hospital. Apparently 'MUFON Quarterly' and ' Conspiracy Theorist Bi-Weekly' were embarrassing publications. He sat with his hand possessively on her thigh as she negotiated her way down country roads they had not travelled in a while. They varied their route each time and had developed 6 ways of travelling to Danville over the years. This route was one they had not taken since the fall because of road conditions but the snow had cleared early this year and they decided to take this path again. After an hour of playing with the radio dial and soaking in the sunshine that was permeating his window, he sighed with relief that can only be felt in total freedom. He looked at the country surroundings and suddenly a wave of familiarity hit him. "Scully, were we here before?" he asks as he sits more upright in his seat. "Huh?" she asks as she is pulled from her train of thought. "Have we driven this road before?" "We were on it in the fall, but not in the winter because..." "No," he clarifies "before." "Uh" she stammers and looks more closely at their surroundings. "Maybe." "We have." He says definitively. "Okay, so?" she asks him. "In fact I think up ahead," he pauses to peer out the front window and point, "in that wooded area, we had wild roadside sex while on the way home from a case." Her face suddenly goes a deep shade of red. "It wasn't my finest moment." "What?" he asks confused. "Sex at the side of the road, Mulder...it was so desperate, so..." "Dirty" he says with a huge grin. "We could have been caught, we could have..." "That's what made it so good." He says as he rubs her thigh. "Scully, I have very fond memories of that afternoon on a deserted country road with you laying fully reclined in the passenger seat, your skirt hiked up to your waist and your legs..." "Mulder," she stammers as her face grows a deeper shade of red, an act he didn't think was possible. "Why are you so embarrassed by our passion for each other?" he asks in all sincerity as he draws soft circles on her thigh with his finger. "Before that time," she pauses to think about her words carefully "whenever we made love, it was just that, making love. That was the first time we had sex, and I remember feeling like things were going to change after that." "Change how?" he asks as they pass the wooded area and he peers down a dirt path to the scene of their torrid exchange. "It's going to sound so corny," she says as she shakes her head from side to side. "Come on, Scully." He encourages "I promise I won't think it's corny." "It's the whole cow and milk thing, that the feminist in me despises but, a small part of me sees the logic in." "Okay, I'm not following." "Have you ever heard the saying 'why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free' when referring to women and their sexual relationships?" "Yes, I have." "Well, what we had back then was precious to me Mulder. When we first made love, I was committed to you 100% and, somehow, I thought that that dirty roadside sex act we were involved in, cheapened our promise to each other." "Do you think it did?" "No," she says as she turns to meet his eyes "but, at the time, I was worried we would stop making love and start just having sex." "Scully," he says turning to face her more fully as she drives "when we are together, it's always in love." "I know that now," she says with a smile "but back then, things were so new and I thought that I really fucked it up." "Technically we both fuc..." "I thought that," she interrupts his joke "if we could have just hot sex without the romance that we were doomed to fail because that was the path all my other relationships took." "The hot sex path?" "The path where sex became just a physical experience, and not an emotional or spiritual one." "You really do see making love as a spiritual experience, don't you?" he asks. "Yeah, I do Mulder," she smiles "especially with you." "Scully," he says softly into her ear "I could never just have sex with you, now or then." "I know Mulder" she giggles. "I guess that memory isn't so bad, after all." "Bad? It was the hottest sex we had ever had, up until that point, of course." "And since?" she asks. "I have a whole repertoire of experiences to choose from. I'm not sure I can pick the hottest..." "Mulder, now you are being ridiculous." She sighs, exasperated. "There was that time in the woodshed," he starts "I got that sliver in my ass but it was worth it." "I remember extracting that sliver." She laughs. "Not my finest hour," he says truthfully. "Or, there was that time on the back porch with the crickets singing a chorus for us to drown out your screams." "That was hot," she agrees. "There was that time in the shower when you scratched my back so hard you drew blood and left welts." "Sorry about that," she winces. "I'm not," he smiles as his eyes glaze over with the memory. "What about the first night on the run, in that seedy hotel?" "The time on the bathroom counter or the time in the chair?" "I forgot about the chair," she smiles. "Scully!" he mock chastises her "how could you forget the time you..." "I know what I did," she interrupts. "That was hot," he says. "I think that one gets my vote." She says. "Okay, that is the hottest time since then." He smiles at her. "Agreed." She nods her head. He smiles warmly at her and lingers a finger near the top of her inside thigh. "We could start a new ritual on our drives to get the mail." "What would that ritual be?" she asks, knowing the answer already. "We could try and top it." "We could," she says softly. His finger dances in between her legs as they part in admittance. ********************************* The end
