Truth (2/12) by Fallon Category: Post-The Truth/Pre-IWTB Summary: Mulder and Scully head toward Mexico, taking a trip down memory lane first. Chapter 2 After a few hours of driving, Mulder parked the plateless car in the parking lot of a rest stop. "What are you doing?" Scully asked him, sounding rather alarmed. "We could get caught...we could be arrested." He smiled a half-hearted grin. "Well, I don't think they can arrest anybody for having an ice cream." "Ice cream, Mulder? Really? Do you know how unhealthy that is, not to mention the fact that we just can't afford it right now?" "We can afford the kiddie cones," he said. "Strawberry or Vanilla?" "Strawberry," she replied reluctantly. She sat in the car for a few minutes while she waited for him to get back. Thirsty, she reached under the car seat for a bottle of water they got from their last hotel. She took a swig, lost in thought, just as her work-turned-life partner opened the car door holding one strawberry and one chocolate ice cream. She smiled. "You always do go right for that chocolate," she pointed out, shaking her head. "One of these days..." He rolled his eyes at her, making her laugh. "Woman, you wound me." "Oh really," she asked, taking a provocative lick of her ice cream cone. He shivered. "I make it my life's mission," she teased. They had a pretty solid moment of teasing until they finished their ice creams. Mulder quickly ran back to the stop to toss out the wrappers, then they got back into the car and drove. Scully watched as he drove past trees and row after row of farmhouses that she'd give almost anything to be able to live in. It didn't take long before she realized they weren't anywhere near Mexico. "Mulder, where exactly are we going?" she asked. "You'll see." They drove due west for another half hour or so until he parked their car outside of an extensive field. He got out of the car and prompted her to do the same, taking her hand and walking her out to the middle of the grassy land. "I get the feeling you're up to no good." "I'm up to very good. Wrong again." She shook her head. "Just tell me what we're doing here, Mulder." "I want to watch the stars with you. I brought a picnic," he said, getting a basket out of the car. "When did you do that?" she asked, clearly flattered. "You fell asleep on the road a couple hours ago." "Oh." She sat cross-legged beside him on the grass. He opened the basket to reveal store-bought grinders and two cans of Bud Light. They took tentative bites of their sandwiches while discussing some of their wackiest cases over the years. He made her laugh, she made him laugh. The laughter that came from them fondly reminiscing over liver-eating mutants was almost and X-file in itself. Before they knew it, the stars were out and they were lying flat against the grass, gazing up and collectively wishing they had a telescope. "Mulder, this is beautiful," Dana said, almost on the verge of happy tears. He rolled over on top of her, tracing the planes of her face with his fingertips and leaning down to place a gentle kiss on her lips. She tasted like ice cream, and her lips parted to allow his tongue entrace. They kissed lazily for awhile, and his hands began to roam over her flat stomach. She groaned in encouragement as he slipped his hand into her jeans and found her clit, rubbing at it in circular motions while sliding his fingers in and out of her. He quickened his pace until he felt her walls convulse around his fingers. She flipped him onto his back and kissed her way down his body with her hands resting under his T-shirt. She eagerly undid his fly and he sprung free. Within seconds, she had her hand wrapped around the base of him as she slid the rest in and out of her mouth, stopping periodically to run her tongue along the underside. She licked and sucked in rhythm with her hands until she felt the warm rush and swallowed it down. He suddenly felt shy and zipped back up. She rested her head against his chest, and his hand traced small circles around the base of her back. She looked up at him. "Do you know how much I love you?" she asked. "I can only hope it's as much as I love you." The tears welled up in his eyes and she brushed her lips against them as they fell down his cheek. She was crying as well. But for all the good reasons. "I miss William," she finally said. "I miss him too." "I wish you had gotten to spend more time with him," she said. "If things had been different," I mean. "Me too." "He was a wonderful baby. And he had--has your nose. And my red hair." "Poor kid," he teased, "Of all the things he could have, my nose wouldn't be on the favorites list." "Stop it," she said quietly. "I love your nose." "Well, you're the only one," he replied. She nuzzled the side of his face and placed a soft kiss near his ear. "We should get going," she pointed out. They gathered the things they'd used for the picnic and got them back into the trunk of their car. Soon, they were on the road again and heading toward Mexico. It was Scully's turn to drive, and Mulder was dozed off in the passenger seat beside her. She wasn't entirely sure of where she was going and that frightened her. She mostly followed an old map they'd picked up a few days earlier, but she still wasn't positive she was headed in the right direction. Hours later, they'd finally reached the border, and Mulder was coming to, finally rested after a day of driving himself. But when they started to get past the border, a security guard approached the car. He asked for their license and registration. "Mulder, wake up!" Scully said, trying to shake some sense into her partner. "What is it?" he asked. "I think we're busted."
